Telegram Export Requirements

Unlike mobile apps, Telegram only provides its comprehensive data export utility inside the official Telegram Desktop application (available for Windows, macOS, and Linux). You cannot perform a full data export from the iOS, Android, or web interfaces.

Telegram offers two export formats:

How to Export Your Complete Telegram Account History

1. Download, install, and log into Telegram Desktop on your computer.
2. Click the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner to open the navigation drawer.
3. Click Settings, then select Advanced.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the menu and click Export Telegram data.
5. In the configuration window, check the categories you wish to download:
   • Account information and personal profile data.
   • Private chats, bot chats, private groups, and public channels.

6. Set your maximum file size download threshold (up to 4,000 MB per file).

How to Export a Single Telegram Chat or Channel

If you do not need your entire account history, you can export an individual conversation, group, or channel:

1. Open the specific conversation or group chat in Telegram Desktop.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the chat pane.
3. Select Export chat history from the dropdown menu.
4. Select the specific media types you want to include (photos, videos, voice notes).
5. Adjust the file size limit slider.
6. Specify the date range if you only need messages from a specific time window.
7. Choose HTML or JSON and click Export.

Security Delays on New Logins

If you recently logged into Telegram Desktop on a new computer, Telegram may place a 24-hour security lock on data exports to protect against unauthorized account takeovers.

When this happens, Telegram displays a notice stating that the export request was received and will become available in 24 hours. Once that period elapses, return to the Export Telegram data menu on the same computer to run the export.
