The short answer

To export a WhatsApp chat, open the thread, tap the contact or group name at the top, select Export Chat, choose whether to attach media, and select your destination. WhatsApp exports a zipped TXT file.

Official WhatsApp Export Limits and Formats

WhatsApp includes a native export function that extracts a single conversation into a plain .txt file along with shared media attachments.

Before exporting, you must understand the strict message volume limits imposed by WhatsApp:

  • Without Media: WhatsApp limits the export to approximately 40,000 recent messages.
  • With Media: WhatsApp limits the export to approximately 10,000 recent messages plus recent attached files.

If your conversation exceeds these thresholds, older messages are omitted from the resulting archive file.

How to Export WhatsApp Chats on iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone and tap the conversation you want to archive.
  2. Tap the contact name or group subject at the top of the screen to open Contact Info or Group Info.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and tap Export Chat.
  4. Select Attach Media or Without Media.
  5. Choose your export destination from the iOS share sheet, such as Save to Files, AirDrop, or your email client.

WhatsApp generates a .zip archive named WhatsApp Chat - [Name].zip containing _chat.txt and separate files for each photo, video, and voice memo.

How to Export WhatsApp Chats on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp on your Android device and open the target chat.
  2. Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the menu.
  3. Tap More, then tap Export chat.
  4. Choose Without media or Include media.
  5. Select your transfer destination from the Android system share sheet, such as Google Drive, local storage, or Gmail.

Why Cloud Backups Are Not Readable Exports

Many users assume that backing up WhatsApp to iCloud on iOS or Google Drive on Android creates an export. This is incorrect.

iCloud and Google Drive backups are encrypted database snapshots designed exclusively for restoring the app onto a phone. You cannot open these backups on a computer, search them with external software, or extract individual message records.

If you need a continuous, human-readable record of your operational conversations across multiple devices, tools like CommunicationOS maintain an active, permanently indexed message history with complete database export options in JSON and SQLite formats.

Handling Media Attachments and Large Archives

When you select Include Media, WhatsApp bundles images, audio memos, and documents into the zip file. However, large files or long voice notes may cause the archive to exceed standard email attachment limits (usually 20 MB to 25 MB).

To preserve large exports with media:

  1. Choose Save to Files on iOS or save directly to your Android device internal storage.
  2. Transfer the .zip file to your computer using a direct cable connection or cloud storage folder.
  3. Extract the archive to view _chat.txt alongside your raw media files.

Frequently asked

Can I export all my WhatsApp chats at once?

No. The native WhatsApp export feature only permits exporting one conversation at a time. To archive multiple conversations, you must repeat the export process manually for each individual or group thread.

Why is my WhatsApp chat export missing older messages?

WhatsApp enforces a hard cap of roughly 40,000 messages without media and 10,000 messages with media per export. Any messages older than those thresholds are automatically excluded from the exported file.

Are deleted WhatsApp messages included in a chat export?

No. The standard export utility only reads messages currently present in your local application database. Messages deleted prior to running the export are permanently omitted.
