Why Signal Backups Are Different

How to Create a Local Backup on Android

Signal for Android allows you to generate an encrypted backup file on your local storage.

1. Open Signal on your Android device and tap your profile icon in the top-left corner.
2. Navigate to Chats > Chat backups.
3. Tap Turn on.
4. Signal will display a 30-digit passphrase on your screen.
5. Write this 30-digit passphrase down accurately and store it in a secure location. If you lose this passphrase, you cannot restore your backup.
6. Tap Enable Backups.
7. Tap Create backup to generate a timestamped .backup file in your chosen local folder.

How to Restore an Android Signal Backup

1. Transfer the .backup file from your old device to your new Android device’s internal storage.
2. Install Signal on the new device, launch the app, and grant the required file permissions.
3. Tap Restore backup when prompted on the initial setup screen.
4. Select the .backup file and enter your 30-digit passphrase.
5. Complete phone number verification.

How to Transfer Signal Chats on iPhone (iOS)

Signal for iOS does not support generating standalone backup files due to iOS sandboxing and Signal’s cryptographic architecture. To move your message history to a new iPhone, you must perform a direct device-to-device migration.

1. Ensure both your old and new iPhones have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
2. Install Signal on your new iPhone and begin the registration process using your phone number.
3. When prompted, select Transfer from iOS Device.
4. On your old iPhone, a transfer prompt will appear. Tap Next.
5. Scan the QR code displayed on the new iPhone using your old iPhone camera.
6. Keep both devices close together until the local encrypted transfer completes.

The Risks of Disappearing Messages and Lost Keys

• Lost Passphrases: On Android, Signal cannot reset or recover a lost 30-digit passphrase. Without the key, the .backup file remains permanently unreadable.
• Disappearing Message Timers: Messages set to disappear will be permanently deleted once their timer expires, regardless of whether a local backup has been generated.
• Broken iOS Devices: If an iPhone is lost, stolen, or damaged before performing a direct transfer, your Signal conversation history cannot be recovered.
